Without
“Her nephews would have dressed her. I gave them the dress she had recently bought and a shirt in percale. The dress was antique pink and sleeveless. Paola never used to go out with her arms exposed, she considered it not very elegant”.
Thus begins this novel, with few measured words that mark the entrance of a man in the time following the disappearance of his beloved wife. That time is a list of places, objects, books, episodes. It’s a time of missing and memory, it proceeds by gaps and oscillations. On one hand, the narration of the present time, traced with great restraint but without any fiction; on the other hand, memories of a life spent together and the echo of a near past: discovering the disease, the treatment, the surgeries, watching over her in an armchair with a blanket on.
Without is the narration of a love to which has been denied the possibility of getting old.
A posthumous letter, but also a diary of the emptiness, the astonishment of surviving places, the intolerance towards the egoism that nestles even in sufferance. And, finally, an apprenticeship of solitude, in a suddenly deserted world where, however, through writing, love survives even to absence.
