Inequality, pollution, poverty, social exclusion, climate breakdown, diseases, new pathologies, extreme weather events and wars already affect the majority of the planet's population. How should they be addressed? Are we doing it the tight way? What changes need to be brought about?
If living well, or Sumak Kawsay, as the indigenous populations of the Andes say in their native language, is both the goal and the end to which we should strive, we must be willing to leave behind the technocapitalist economic and production model, or at least radically rethink it. Starting from the awareness that we are not the center of everything, and other living entities are not inanimate objects at our exclusive disposal.
After a no-holds-barred analysis of the systemic crisis into which the entire globe has been engulfed for decades, Giuseppe De Marzo proposes a "patient" yet radical model for rethinking, first and foremost, humanity's role within the planet. And it identifies a dual challenge to address, both as individuals and as societies.
On a personal level, we must assume responsibility for reorienting our lives and our communities toward a sustainable and equitable future. On a collective level, we need a politics aimed at the common good, capable of embracing and acknowledging the complexity of the historical moment we find ourselves in, capitalizing on its opportunities: a politics of friendship, to use a term coined by new popular movements.
