When You Come
Pugno's writing is authoritative and strangely compelling: it captures the reader and makes for a passionate and intense experience
A great writer is born
A poetical and misterious female character
A visionary and cruel, fascinating but discomforting fable
Eva is a young, introvert girl who lives a modest but decent life with her mother in a trailer parked along a highway near the sea. When she is eleven, for no apparent reason, she gets kidnapped by a hobo, who sets her free, unharmed, after three days. A couple of years later, while her life is taking a delicate turn (she has lost her virginity to Stasi, her mother’s lover; her mother is dying; Stasi is getting more and more violent and she has started having weird allucinations), the mysterious man reappears and the two of them run away together, this time as allies. He explains that they share a gift: by touching other people’s hands they can see their death. After travelling through a barren landscape of swamps devastated by pollution and fires, they reach Santiago, another seer and an old friend of the man’s, and get some rest at her house, where Eva learns more about their past (and their future) before the present dramatically catches up with them all.
A fascinating page-turner halfway between a coming-of-age story and a supernatural thriller, Quando verrai is also a powerful meditation on the way we use our body as an instrument for communication or self-knowledge, and on the mysterious relationship between flesh and spirit, love and violence, life and death.
